Smart contracts are coming to Bitcoin through Dfinity’s Internet Computer

Dfinity Foundation’s Internet Computer blockchain is bringing smart-contract capabilities to the Bitcoin (BTC) network, potentially opening the door to new use cases for the premier cryptocurrency. 

Internet Computer will utilize its so-called chain key cryptography to integrate with Bitcoin, paving the way for smart contracts with native BTC addresses that are hosted directly on Internet Computer, Dfinity Foundation announced Tuesday.

“Internet Computer smart contracts will gain access to bitcoin liquidity, and Bitcoin will gain powerful new smart contract functionality, without the need for insecure and cumbersome trusted bridging services,” explained Dominic Williams, the founder and chief scientist of Dfinity Foundation.

Seagate to Launch Mass Market 20TB HDDs in the Coming Months

Seagate is working on multiple consumer hard drives featuring a 20TB capacity that will use perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) and shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technologies, which are more cost effective than Seagate’s current, business-focused HAMR technology. The company’s 20TB SMR HDDs will be available in the second half of this calendar year, so they’re not too far out.

“We expect to begin shipping 20TB PMR drives in the second half of this calendar year,” said Dave Mosley, CEO of Seagate, during the company’s earnings call with analysts and investors (via SeekingAlpha).

Samsung Teases PCIe 5.0 SSDs: Coming in Q2 2022

Samsung has published some preliminary details about its enterprise-grade SSDs featuring a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface. The drives will be available in an E3.S 1T form-factor within a year, just in time for the first PCIe 5.0-supporting enterprise platforms, like AMD’s EPYC Genoa and Intel’s Sapphire Rapids, to hit the market. 

Samsung’s PM1743 solid-state drive will be based on the company’s proprietary controller as well as 6th Generation TLC V-NAND memory, reports ServeTheHome. The SSD is rated for up to one drive writes per day (1 DWPD) and is designed for mixed workloads.
