More people than ever are installing Android and iPhone apps

It looks like both Google and Apple saw record-breaking numbers when it came to mobile app installs in 2021.

SensorTower measures the most popular app installs for Google and Apple devices, and in 2021 there was a 20% increase in users purchasing apps.

Many of the most popular apps appear to be social media apps and games, with TikTok, Facebook and Instagram being at the top of the most-installed charts, alongside games such as Honor of Kings and Coin Master.

However, we’re starting to see different ways in which we can access these apps, with Apple M1-powered Macs allowing iOS

Switching from Android to iPhone exposed my friends’ real feelings

Now that I have FaceTime, I have friends who suddenly want to video-call.

Sarah Tew/CNET

When I decided to ditch my Android phone in favor of an iPhone this summer, I didn’t think it was going to matter very much. I’ve been using an Android phone and many non-iOS services, like WhatsApp, Signal and Instagram, to text and video chat with my family and friends for years. I barely even think about what type of phone someone uses when I text them. I just use whichever messaging service is most convenient for them. Although standard texting may be antiquated,

Apple working on a software update to enable Face ID after third party iPhone 13 screen repairs

Last week iFixit found out that unauthorized screen repairs on the brand new iPhone 13 series render Face ID useless. This is due to a tiny new control chip implemented in the flex cable connecting the screens on the phones that links each display to its unique motherboard. This meant that all repair shops not part of Apple’s Independent Repair Program would be forced to desolder the small chip from the broken screen and then re-solder it on the new display – a process which would take plenty of time and effort as well as special equipment not available in

WhatsApp history can be transferred from an iPhone to any phone launching with Android 12

For a short while you’ve been able to transfer your WhatsApp history from an iPhone to a Samsung device, and now this capability is being extended to all Google Pixels too.

Not just that, however – Google is announcing that any phone launching with Android 12 will be able to do the same. So, in a few months, it won’t be limited to just Samsung and Google devices.

The transfer works in a rather simple manner. Take the Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro. All you need is a Lightning to USB-C cable. You connect your Pixel to your iPhone

Help! Android phones now copying Apple’s flat iPhone 12 design & MagSafe

Some “blast from the past” examples:
  • The headphone jack – It’s been five years since Apple ditched the 3.5mm audio port. Of course, as you know, other smartphones followed through, and now it’s a rarity to see a smartphone that has a dedicated AUX port.
  • Face ID – Secure 3D unlock was first introduced with the iPhone X. Then, a few Android manufacturers copied this feature, and that’s how we ended up with phones with huge notches when in reality, a fingerprint reader is a much more practical solution. Huawei even had both a UTS fingerprint sensor and 3D face

Secret iPhone hardware upgrade Apple doesn’t want you to have

Here’s a really cool hardware hack for your iPhone XR, iPhone 11, or iPhone 12 that adds built-in dual nano-SIM support.

Dual nano-SIM support is not available on iPhones outside of China. Instead, those markets offer a single physical SIM with support for a second eSIM.

But YouTuber Hugh Jeffreys got thinking. What if you changed the SIM reader and tray in a regular iPhone for one from a Chinese iPhone?

Surely it wouldn’t work.

But it did.

iOS 15: Major iPhone software update will change how notifications and home screen works, report claims

An upcoming update to Apple’s iOS will change how its notifications and home screen works, according to a new report.

It will allow people to customise their notifications, redesign the home screen on the iPad, as well as bringing new privacy protections, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

The iOS 15 update is expected to be unveiled this summer ahead of a full release around September, as in previous years.

But the new report claims to reveal some of the key features that will be introduced to that upgrade, both for the iPhone and iPad.
